Privacy
How Analytics counts visitors without cookies, what each plan stores, and how long it is kept.
Analytics is built to tell you how your site is used without tracking the people who use it.
No cookies, no profiles
- The tag sets no cookies and stores nothing on the visitor's device, except a short queue of visits that could not be sent yet (kept up to a day).
- To count a visitor once per day we combine their IP address and browser into a one-way code with a secret that changes every day and is different for every site. Yesterday's code cannot be matched to today's, and one site's cannot be matched to another's.
- Visitors' IP addresses are used only to look up an approximate location and are never saved with your stats.
- Because of this, a person who visits on three different days counts as three daily visitors. That is the price of not tracking anyone across days, and it is how the dashboard counts.
Signals we respect
The tag does not act on Global Privacy Control: it builds no profile and shares nothing, so those visits are counted like any other.
- Do Not Track: optional per site, under Settings, Privacy and alerts.
- Visits from
localhost, bots and crawlers, link previews and prerendered pages are left out.
What is stored
| Free sites | Prime sites | |
|---|---|---|
Page address (without query, except utm_ values on Prime), the referring site, country, device type | Yes | Yes |
| Region and city, network name, browser, operating system, screen size | No | Yes |
| Time on page, campaign values, full referring link, custom events | No | Yes |
Free sites never collect the Prime-only details, so they do not exist anywhere. A Prime owner can also switch off the detailed stats for a single site.
How long it is kept
- Free: the last 365 days.
- Prime: everything, for as long as you have Prime. If Prime ends, history older than a year is kept for 30 days and then trimmed to the free 365 days.
- Deleted sites stop collecting at once and their stats are removed after 30 days. Deleting your Hep.gg account removes every site and its stats.
Do I need a cookie banner?
The tag uses no cookies and builds no profile of your visitors, which is the reason most sites can use it without a consent banner. Your obligations depend on where you and your visitors are, so check the rules that apply to you.
